Using Positive Adoption Language: Words Matter

professional talking to pregnant person, positive adoption language, PAL, birth parent

We often hear from birth and expectant parents that they feel a lack of support from others before, during, and after a placement. As healthcare and social service professionals, you have a unique opportunity to offer support and care during a critical time in a pregnant woman’s journey.

Using Positive Adoption Language (PAL) demonstrates respect for patients and clients and encourages other professionals to communicate with birth parents in a more positive way, creating a supportive environment for birth parents.

Here are just a few examples of things that are often said surrounding adoption, and what you can choose to say instead.

Have questions about what to say? We’re here for you! Schedule a phone call with one of our social workers and feel confident discussing adoption as an option with your patients. Email [email protected] or call (800)-321-5683.
