Join Spence-Chapin for a special Continuing Education workshop in collaboration with Rutgers University School of Social Work that will enhance your understanding of the varied homeless population, as well as factors contributing to this crisis. Together, we will explore the salient issues affecting those who are unhoused, in particular, women. Topics addressed will include the history of homelessness in America, as well as its criminalization, psychiatric illness, and substance use disorder, and their impact on housing, lack of social support, and the housing availability crisis.
Social workers and case managers need to face a multitude of issues to begin to chip away at the problems that keep people from finding a place they can call home. This unique workshop is designed with a particular focus on professionals working in the perinatal healthcare field, social workers, and child welfare professionals. Throughout the free training, participants will be introduced to Spence-Chapin and the free services we offer to women and couples who are considering adoption or making an adoption plan for their baby. Through case examples, attendees will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the unique challenges faced by women who are homeless, pregnant, and considering adoption.
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Identify the primary issues that may be affecting the homeless population they serve.
- Define the different types of homelessness (e.g., chronic, transitional, and episodic) and various strategies to support each group.
- Describe hidden or root causes of homelessness and a path forward for individual clients within various systems.
