Sherene & Javon

We are a loving family of three, excited to welcome another child to our lives. Our story
is a special one: we have been together since 2007, celebrated our marriage in 2012, and welcomed our beautiful and brilliant son, Amir, in 2019. We live together in a warm and cozy apartment in Brooklyn, New York. Javon is a native New Yorker and Sherene has been living in Brooklyn for over 20 years. We love to travel, spend time with friends and family, explore new foods, music and art. Javon has worked in real estate for 13 years and focuses on helping first-time homeowners and ensuring there is equitable opportunities and access to the housing market for all New Yorkers. Sherene is a lawyer who has worked on criminal justice reform issues for over 20 years. Adoption is woven into our family already. Sherene was adopted as an infant from an agency in Illinois. We adopted Amir through Spence-Chapin in 2019 and he has transformed our life. We feel truly lucky to be parents and are thrilled to begin the adoption journey again.

Our Life

We lead a busy yet balanced family life. We both work full time and Amir just started Montessori preschool at the same place where he attended summer camp. We share parenting responsibilities equally and are both dedicated to spending time with Amir. Sherene does morning drop-off most days and Javon takes over at the end of the day. On our weekends, we have what we call “family adventures” – doing all types of things like taking a day-trip upstate to hike, finding a new playground or water-sprinklers in the summer months, visiting museums, visiting friends and family outside of NYC, going out to eat or taking a trip to Governor’s Island. When we don’t have a “family adventure” on the books we often have a playdate for Amir, meet up with friends, or take Amir to the New York Public Library. Throughout the week, we share responsibilities. We each cook, clean and do the shopping. We take turns putting Amir to bed. After Amir goes down, we will sometimes do some work or watch TV together. Each summer, we meet up for a family vacation with Sherene’s family. Javon’s father and stepmother live in Brooklyn they come over to visit and spend time with Amir and we often celebrate birthdays and holidays together.

Our Family

We both have strong relationships with our immediate and extended family. Sherene has two sisters one has two children that are 8 and 5 years old. Our son is very close with his cousins and we make every effort to visit regularly with them. Sherene’s parents are retired and love seeing our son and very excited by the idea of another grandchild. They speak to Amir and video chat regularly. Javon’s father and stepmother live nearby us in Brooklyn and love spending time with Amir and coming over to babysit.
Javon is close with his mother who lives in Arizona and talks with her regularly and video chats with Amir whenever she can. We have a tight knit circle of friends that is an amazing support system and are like aunties and uncles to our son and would be the same for our second child. Our friends have children that range in age from 4 to 16 years old. We all believe it takes a village and value all the different experiences and types of people that our circle of friends and family offer to our child.

Final Thoughts

We are grateful for this opportunity to share a little bit about ourselves with you. We love being parents and would be honored to bring another child into our family to love.
