John & Francesco

We are John and Francesco and we met 6 years ago. We have been married for 2 years now, but already long before getting married we started dreaming about having children. After many years working in research universities, we now have new jobs that give us the stability that allowed us to start the process to adopt a child. We live in a lovely apartment with access to nature preserves and hiking trails and we look forward to sharing it with a child, and raising them here.

About Francesco

I am 35 years old and I work as a scientist. I like doing sports: I swim multiple times a week and sometimes I go to the gym or work out at home. In the winter I go skiing.

I love reading, both novels and non-fiction. My favorite genre is science-fiction, because it allows the author to explore interesting ideas and concepts, like in a book I read recently that rotated around linguistics and semiotics in an alien species. Regarding non-fiction, I am a scientist who changed fields of research several times in the course of my career, so when I can I read about topics on which I’ve worked in the past, like physics. But I also enjoy reading about history, politics, and architecture. I particularly love learning about architecture, and sometimes use software – and video games – to reproduce some architectural concepts I saw in a magazine or in a video.

I like to learn languages. My mother tongue is Italian, and I speak English and German. I am studying Arabic (at a basic level), and I have very basic knowledge of a few concepts of Mandarin. I especially love links and correspondences between languages, so I enjoy reading about linguistics. I try to keep my German trained by watching German television or reading news in German, and I regularly watch Italian news and TV shows and read books in Italian.

I am sometimes involved in science outreach and teacher training, in which I teach groups of teachers about some topics and educational units that they can use in the classroom.

About John

I am 32 and work as a biologist. I like to swim, bike, and go on nature hikes. I enjoy outdoor work and tending to my garden. As a scientist, my research focused on pollinator health. I love observing plants, insects, and other animals in nature and am always outside in any season. My husband and I are very nerdy and very supportive of each other’s passions and hobbies.

Fun Fact: John is an entomologist and studies insects, and he lived in South America for 2 and a half years. Francesco is from Italy and moved to the United States 7 years ago. We therefore plan to raise our child as bilingual, English and Italian, and our child will have dual American and Italian citizenship. In addition, John also speaks Spanish and Francesco also speaks German.

Our Lives

We enjoy the simple things. We wake up early in the morning to have breakfast together and do sports before Francesco goes to the office and John to his home-office. After work and on the weekends we do many different things. We love to be in nature, so we go for walks and hikes, and we take care of a small lot in the local community garden – although John does most of the work there, Francesco likes to harvest the tomatoes. We love to cook, and John has picked up a lot of true Italian cuisine since we started dating, experimenting with new combinations. We always cook all of our food and we have a tradition of making homemade pizza on Fridays. We also like watching movies and documentaries.

Our Family

We feel very close to both our families. John has two younger brothers, and his parents live in Maine, where we love to go on vacation. Francesco’s family lives in Italy: His parents and his younger brother, who has a daughter born in May 2024, all live in Francesco’s hometown, and we regularly spend some time there to visit Francesco’s family, hike, ski, and as a base to visit other parts of Italy, including Sicily, where part of Francesco’s family is from. Francesco has many cousins, one of which lives in Boston with her son and daughter, and we keep in touch with several of them.

Final Thoughts

We know that this is a hard moment for you. We want you to know that we will go above and beyond to raise the child that is placed in our home in a nurturing and loving environment and that we’ll do our best to remove any obstacle that hinders them from expressing their full potential.
